Tailgating Travel Trays
For all of you out there who enjoy traveling; for all of you out there who bring food to gatherings, cookouts, pot-luck, church functions and to shut-ins; for all of you who need that tray to carry to the other room while watching TV or out to the sun porch for a snack…
This is the tray for you!
...No more spilled beans or spaghetti in your car, no more clean-ups and no more fumbling with several dishes being brought out to special occasions; perfect for catering or simply home decor!I wish that I could take credit for the creation of these wonderful trays, but I cannot. I do not know who came up with the age-old idea; I simply improved on it and then gave it some character by adding my personal touches.
In 1994, I was given a carrying tray with pegs as a gift. I didn’t quite understand its function so it sat in the cupboard for almost 2 years before I used it; little did I know what I had been missing! As a 20-yr. veteran Boy Scout Leader, I actually used the tray out of desperation when I ran out of hands…and I’ve been using it ever since! It was only a few months later that I found a similar tray (missing the pegs) at a thrift shop. This tray was a little longer, which was very helpful, but it had been made with metal cabinet handles. I soon realized how much better the wooden handles were because they are easier to grasp; hands don’t slip out should the tray suddenly fall from one’s hold.
In 2006, I decided to make these trays as gifts for family members. I changed the dimensions, (yet they still fit well into the cabinet), used polyurethane stain and wood burned each tray with unique designs. They were such a big hit, that I started making & selling them to friends and at church craft fairs, some of which are pictured here.
- These handcrafted, carry trays can accommodate a 9"x13" pan and are great for tailgating, taking on cookouts and can easily be used as a serving tray, bed tray and child’s drawing table!
- Each tray comes with a set of 8 pegs (contained in a handmade fabric pouch); the pegs are used to hold food items in their place (i.e., serving dishes, bowls, casserole dishes, pots, pans, etc.), while moving from one location to another—without the spills!
- All trays, handles and pegs are made of sturdy wood which has been sealed with waterproof polyurethane stain for easy cleaning (including pegs & holes) and handles are secured with rustproof screws before sealing.
- Every tray is numbered and signed and are unique because they are hand-drawn and wood-burned—so, no two are exactly alike!—Enjoy!!
- An optional clear plexi-glass insert is available ($5 additional cost) to cover the peg holes allowing for a flat surface so that the tray may also be used as a lap or bed tray and/or children’s drawing table.
